TecSense TecHSA Headspace Analyzer

The TecSense TecHSA determines the volume of the headspace in closed, carbonated flasks by analysing the pressure in it. The HSA application is for carbonated beverages and beers.

The TecSense HSA determines the following parameters for the headspace of beer and carbonated beverages in bottles and cans. These parameters also provide information on the correct setting of the filling system.

  • FG Foreign gas content in the head space (ml/l)
  • HSO Oxygen O2 amount in the head space (mg/l)
  • HSV Head Space Volume (ml)
  • CO2-amaount (g/l)
  • FV Filling volume in the container (ml)

Semiautomatic determination of O2 , CO2 and foreign gas in the headspace of bottles

Field of application

This instrument is applied to control beer and carbonized drinks in final packages (bottle or can) with carbon dioxide content greater than 2g/liter.

Control of the filling process and filling device (bottle or can) by measuring foreign gas (FG) and oxygen in the head space (HSO), carbon dioxide CO2 in the liquid and the filling volume (FV).

The measurement should be done within 1 hour after filling, before pasteurizing the bottle or can. After 1 hour and/or pasteurization the oxygen content will be lower because of oxidation processes.

Measurement principle

The measurement is performed automatically. The sealed container is pierced, the head space gas enters the measuring head containing an optical oxygen sensor, a pressure and temperature sensors.

Head space oxygen (HSO), foreign gas (FG), head space volume (HSV) and carbon dioxide are measured simultaneously in the same container.

The carbon dioxide is measured according to Henry's law by means of measuring the container pressure and liquid temperature.
